RE: Winterizing - Don't forget the LCD TV/s!

Ours comes out, only because it gives my youngest daughter a TV and DVD player in her room for the winter, she thinks thats cool. Our comes out because we mount it in our kitchen so I can watch TV while doing my winter projects, holiday baking, etc. :)

RE: Different Thanksgiving Side Dish

I recently made a VERY similar recipe that used wild rice, golden raisins and slivered almonds. It was a big hit, but I love the cranberry and cashew twist. YUMMY! Thanks for sharing!

RE: CROCK POT HAMBURGER CASSEROLE

This sounds good, do you think it would work well with reduced fat cream soup?
It seems like so many crock pot recipes require "cream of something" (mushroom, chicken, celery) soup. I'm forever in search of crock pot recipes that DO NOT contain cream soups because they're so high in fat and sodium. If anyone has any to share I'd love to hear them.

RE: Slow Cooked Bean Medley Dinner

This is my FAVE baked bean recipe:
AMAZING BAKED BEANS
6 slices bacon
1 cup chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1 (16 ounce) can pinto beans
1 (16 ounce) can great Northern beans, drained
1 (16 ounce) can baked beans
1 (16 ounce) can red kidney beans, drained
1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup molasses
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain, reserving 2 tablespoons of drippings, crumble and set aside in a large bowl. Cook the onion and garlic in the reserved drippings until onion is tender; drain excess grease and transfer to the bowl with the bacon.
To the bacon and onions add pinto beans, northern beans, baked beans, kidney beans and garbanzo beans. Stir in ketchup, molasses, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and black pepper. Mix well and transfer to a 9x12 inch casserole dish.
Cover and bake in preheated oven for 1 hour.
Note: As a time saver I've used pre-cooked bacon and pre-chopped onion and skipped the saute step all together -- just tossing the onion, bacon and garlic in with all the rest of it. Seems to work just fine. It also works well in the crock pot! :)

RE: How many Thanksgivings do you have?

Ours had kind of gotten that way too. This year it just happened to work out that my Mom thinks we'll be at the In-Laws and the In-Laws think we'll be at my Mom's. We're thinking we could possibly just fly under the radar and go out to dinner on our own...think we'll get away with it? LOL!

Do they have to be fried or can you make some kind of tater casserole? A good, make ahead casserole that you can heat in the oven might be just the thing!

RE: Smoking with kids in the car a $100 fine in California!

In a perfect world everyone would have the common sense to buckle up, wear helmets, not smoke around their kids, and so on and so on and so on and so on...
Unfortunately, there are just too many people in this world who are selfish or just plain stupid.
I have no problem with laws that protect children, the elderly, the mentally handicapped or anyone else that cannot protect themselves. The smoking law that started this thread is just such a law.

RE: Jello pudding salad - help please.

My stepmom always makes this one, YUM!
CRANBERRY SALAD
2 (3 ounce) packages raspberry flavored jello
1 (16 ounce) can whole cranberry sauce
1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple with juice
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
1 cup chopped pecans
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
Drain crushed pineapple and save 1/4 cup of the juice. Dissolve gelatin in 2 cups of hot water. Stir in cranberries and crushed pineapple. Pour 1/2 of the mixture in a bowl and leave at room temperature, set the other 1/2 in the refrigerator until firm.
In a separate bowl mix together the cream cheese, mayonnaise, reserved pineapple juice and chopped pecans. Spread mixture over chilled gelatin. Place in refrigerator for 10 minutes. Pour the room temperature gelatin over the top of the cream cheese layer and refrigerate until set.
*On a side note, I recently found out my 3 year old grandson HATES jello. Pudding too! Is that weird or what? Last time he came over I made strawberry jello with fruit in it and ended up eating it myself because he refused to touch it. I think that's the first child I've ever met who didn't like jello!

RE: Our camping weekend, without camping!

We've visited our camping friends without camping on a few occasions when we've had to work or had a schedule conflict. Why not enjoy the meals and friendly conversation even if you DO have to go home and sleep in the stick house? Glad you had such a great time!

RE: What are we all eating??

What food do you never tire of ?
Cheese (I have said for years that if cheese didn't exist I'd be thinner!)
What food do you eat now that you never thought you would eat ?
Oatmeal (I detested hot cereal of all kinds growing up and now I LOVE oatmeal!)
What's your favorite comfort food/meal ?
Macaroni & Cheese. (I hardly ever eat it because it's bad for you, but if I were allowed I could live on it!!)
Usual breakfast ?
Veggie Egg White Scramble (I try and get a little protein and my first two servings of vegetables with breakfast.)
What you had for lunch today ?
I haven't had it yet but it's going to be a Chicken Romaine Salad with Balsamic Vinagrette (although I must say French Onion Soup sounds way better!)
Favorite salad dressing ?
Bleu Cheese (I LOVE it!)
Favorite seafood ?
Crab or Shrimp (I think it's a tie!)
A food you can't stand?
Eggplant (I've tried it several ways but I just can't do it!)

RE: Thanksgiving--roast your turkey upside down!

On America's Test Kitchen (PBS) I just watched them butterfly a turkey, brine it and then roast it over the top of a large pan of sausage stuffing. The drippings from the bird flavored the stuffing and the "butterflied" bird cooked evenly and had a beautiful crispy skin. You also do most of the prep work the night before and the butterflied turkey only took about 90 minutes to roast to perfection. It was awesome, and looked pretty easy. I really want to try this!
Here's a link to a written article about it:

RE: Kebmo where are you?

The sad part is who cares how many recipes are strung together. It's real simple. When you see his post don't look and don't comment. Better for everyone then don't you think?
Do a search on a recipe and see how many pages are taken up by a single post with a dozen long recipes. It impacts others even if one chooses not to read his posts up front.
SuperDave really does have a point, and I hate to say it, but that's why I often didn't read Kebamo's posts. Overload. Way too much pasted together in a single post. I'm not sure if he tried all those recipes or not, I kind of doubt it. I would much rather have ONE tried and true recipe from a poster than a dozen they posted but haven't ever made. JMHO. Other people seemed to enjoy his posts though, and that's all that really matters. I usually just skip them.
That being said, I have to agree with the other posters about the BULLIES on this forum. It's so easy to skip a post you aren't interest in, why not do just that? Why do some feel the need to post a negative comment? I wish everyone lived by juliev's "If you can't say anything nice, then just don't say anything at all" philosophy.
SwanInWA I guess everyone is different. I come to here to have fun get to talk to new people and since it's an open forum pick and choose what ever I want to look at. -NOT ARGUEING JUST TALKING- (mood setter) We are around the campfire talking after a good meal and adult beverage of choice. I also think most of what this has man posted has been tried since he owns at least one restarent. An even if this is not the case it doesn't matter. I think its fine for him to post anyway he pleases until the rules change.I think it's fine for him to post any way he pleases too, I just skip them as stated in my original post. Other people enjoy them which is what really matters -- also stated in my original post. I had no intention of arguing, simply stating that when it comes to searching for recipes, etc. SuperDave has a VERY valid point. Sometimes less is more. I guess I'm not sure what point you're trying to get across to me...sorry.

RE: grilled cheese sandwitch

I recently discovered that Muir Glen makes the best tomato soup I've ever tasted (from a can anyway). My husband and I both love it. I pair their Organic Hearty Tomato with a Mozzarella/Pesto Panini and to me it's one of the most heavenly comfort foods -- and fairly healthy besides!
To make the sandwich I use artisan or sourdough bread, slices of low-fat mozzarella and tomato, and a thin layer of store bought pesto sauce. Lightly brush the outside of the sandwich with olive oil, then grill on a hot skillet or in a panini press. Serve with tomato soup. YUM!

RE: Wife Retires.........

That all sounds very honerable, but I been to Jury Duty 8 times and I talk to people that have never been. System doesn't seem to fair.
My wife was summond to jury duty just before one of our trips, she call and they postpone it until March of 09'
Jack I hear ya! My husband and I are both registered voters. I've been called to jury duty at least a half dozen times since living in this County and my husband has been called ONCE. Before his name finally came up I was teasing him and telling him that the next time I got a summons I was going to call and tell them it was HIS TURN! :B
